David R. Janis is General Counsel at H.W. Kaufman Group, where he is responsible for providing counsel on transactions, contracts and litigation, while working closely with the company’s Compliance department. He also deploys best practices for corporate governance, as well as building a responsible and responsive framework for strategic risk management and mitigation.

With approximately 20 years of experience, David has worked as a practicing attorney and corporate advisor. Previously he served as Associate General Counsel at Rocket Mortgage in Detroit. As an active member of the company’s Risk Advisory Group and Risk Counsel, David set the strategy for Legal Compliance and Risk, as well as authoring policies regarding employee conduct and ethics, Information Security and Vendor Management. He has also held roles with WellCare (Meridian Health Plan) and Flagstar Bank.

He graduated with honors from Michigan State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political theory and constitutional democracy. Additionally, he earned a Juris Doctorate from the Wayne State University Law School. David is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and previously served as Chair of its Antitrust, Franchising and Trade Regulation section. In 2016, he was named a DBusiness Top Corporate Counsel in metro Detroit.
